2023/24 Research Findings
Published March 2026
Each year, the SMSF Association commissions independent research to examine how self‑managed super funds (SMSFs) have performed compared with APRA‑regulated superannuation funds. This research is conducted by Adelaide University.
The latest findings show that SMSFs continued to outperform APRA‑regulated funds over the five‑year period to June 2024.
Over this period, SMSFs achieved a 5‑year rate of return that was 1.1 percentage points higher than APRA‑regulated funds. The research also highlights the growing size of the SMSF sector, with total assets now exceeding $1 trillion.
While results can vary depending on how an SMSF is set up and managed, the findings provide useful insight into long‑term performance trends for trustees.
* Five‑year annualised rates of return for SMSFs and APRA‑regulated funds are based on geometric means.
