A Look Back at the Growth of Index-Based Investing in Australia
Much has happened in the 20 years since the launch of the S&P/ASX Series in 2000. Australians have witnessed sharp ups and downs in the stock market, though over the long term, growth has trended upward. A deep and liquid ecosystem of financial products, including ETFs and listed futures and options, has developed around key S&P/ASX benchmarks, allowing both active and passive investors to more efficiently deploy capital and hedge market exposures. This has accompanied a broader trend toward index-based investing, which has reduced investment costs and allowed easier access to different segments of the Australian market via index-linked products. Through all of this, the S&P/ASX 200 has been there to serve as the official barometer of the market and will continue to do so for years to come.
